Deck Gunner is a vertical scroll shooter with three difficulty tiers. Easy and standard are reasonable on-ramps; the veteran tier locks until you clear standard and runs without continues. The difficulty discipline is the strongest part of the design.
The wave roster has fewer enemy types than a typical arena shooter (eight versus the usual sixteen) but each type plays harder for it. The veteran tier is where the eight-type roster shines; you learn each type cold and the late waves combine them in punishing patterns.
I played across a long weekend and a couple of Liverpool Liverpool Merseyrail rides. The vertical scroll suits phone portrait better than the usual landscape format.
The flaw is the standard-to-veteran gap. The veteran tier is harder than the standard tier by a wider margin than the easy-to-standard gap, which puts an artificial wall in front of the late-game content. A pacing pass would help. Three stars.
